A Book is a Truly Magical Experience

It is a gift to find the time or take the time to indulge in the age old tradition of stories. Our oral history is crucial to success of the human existence. The connection we are awarded when we read or listen to the world through a lens not our own, is brilliant.

I live to read. I live for the written word and I have created a bold list of books that offer essential life lessons from fiction to biographical fodder peppered with non fiction, this list fills every orifice of my soul.

Politics

What is Justice?

To understand a broken system, it is imperative to rip at the roots of  how humans interpret the value of human life.

I read this gem in high school and have kept my copy and flung through the pages on a many occasion since.

Text is centred justified with an image of Muhammad Ali and his fist punching.

The Greatest

Honesty in the oddest place

I found this book beneath a dusty stack of stories in the backroom of a basement mall secondhand bookshop.

The honesty through recorded interviews and his frank interpretation of life while dodging the draft is beautifully written and leaves a warm lasting impression.

The Author's name - Rudyard Kipling - is printed in capital white letters with a solid white line beneath the text and a small line drawing of a camel and 2 more nondescript animals.

Just So Stories

How the rhino got his skin

I've always enjoyed the origin story. Knowing where things begin offers sense to why things have evolved to a true shitpile.

*use of outdated, racist and offensive language.

The Alchemist

What's in a dream

I remember completing this fable and realizing what love truly means. When we love a dream more than we love ourselves, success is inevitable.

Beautiful Losers

Convoluted daydream

Filled with confusing narratives, text twists and constantly changing structures with post modern interpretations of a love triangle.

Book Jacket image for Beautiful Losers by Leonard Cohen. The image represents the photo negative of a forest with bright yellow over exposed to represent sunlight. The left justified text at the bottom of the image is a seraph text in capital letters that says Beautiful Losers by Leonard Cohen.

Frankenstien

Who is the monster?

Let kindness always be blind.

The Lottery

Choice reduced to stone

This story showed me as a very young person that human nature is manipulated by the masses.
